You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.
So the Pap test is gone. Long live the Cervical Screening Test - CST!
But wait…it’s the same procedure? And you’re also telling us that we don’t need to test as often? And who is HPV and what do they have to do with my cervix?
It’s no wonder one of the most common questions we get about cervical screening is: “Wait, what’s happening?”
You might have seen our videos on Facebook and Twitter (maybe you saw our giant billboard at Marrickville train station?) earlier in the year, talking about The Inner Circle and the importance of cervical screening for all LGBTIQ people with a cervix. We wanted to get our communities talking about cervical screening and helping each other to stay up to date with a potentially life-saving test.
We also know that our communities screen less (or not at all) and that the test itself can be incredibly hard for some people. So we got community members to share their stories – about being a trans guy trying to find a good doctor; about what it’s like to be a trauma survivor getting through a Pap test; or about how so many of us have been told we don’t need cervical screening because of who we have sex with (NOT TRUE). You can watch all their stories right here.
It’s important to get our communities talking about their health, talking about why getting certain tests done can be scary, but how we can help each other through it. It’s not always easy to love your body, but you can take care of it and of each other.
Cervical screening is important; it saves lives and we want you to stick around.
One of the best ways to take care of your health is to take charge of it, and that means getting the right info, making informed choices, and sharing your knowledge with the people you care about - invite them into your Inner Circle.
The changes to cervical screening aren’t simple and some of them sound utterly baffling (Are you sure testing less often is better? TRUE!). Understanding this, we’ve gathered some of the most frequently asked questions and answered them for you. Many of these questions come directly from our clients at ACON’s Check OUT: LGBTIQ+ Sexual Health Clinic (run in partnership with Family Planning NSW), where we do a lot of cervical screening for our communities (read more about Check OUT here).
